In 1 Samuel 16, the Lord tells Samuel that He has rejected Saul as king and to go to Bethlehem to a man named Jesse where he will find the next king.  Samuel goes to Jesse and each of Jesse’s sons pass by Samuel without the Lord confirming that any of them are the next king.  Samuel is even impress by Eliab’s physical presence and thinks for sure he is the one.  I am sure he must have thought the same about the others sons.  Yet the Lord makes it clear to Samuel that outward appearance is not the important thing here as he says in verse 7, “do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”  This is something I need to be reminded of over and over again.  Lord, help me see the heart of people and not make judgments based on their outward appearance.
