In Revelation 2 and 3, the Lord gives John seven letters to write to seven different churches (Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodecia).  He gives some encouraging words of some things these churches are doing well and he gives some areas of warning where compromise has begun to take place.  The words that stand out most to me are the words to the church of Ephesus when he says, “you have left your first love.”  A Christian is to love the Lord Jesus Christ first and foremost.  Although the church of Ephesus had their doctrine right, had persevered through difficulty and withstood heresy – they had grown cold in their love for Jesus. God calls them to repent.  Instead of seeking information through God’s Word, they needed to allow His Word to bring about transformation in their lives that would make them more passionately love Jesus.  Lord, guard my heart from pursuing knowledge for knowledge’s sake.  Instead, let me pursue knowing Your heart more and more – resulting in loving You more.
