In Genesis 4  we see the downward spiral that sin leads to without the intervention of God. Adam and Eve have 2 sons, Cain and Abel.  Cain kills Abel out of anger and the downward spiral continues.  Then it is recorded that Cain went out from the presence of the Lord (never a good thing).  Cain eventually marries and has offspring. One of Cain’s descendants, Lamech, continues the downward spiral of sin by taking 2 wives. Lamech then boasts of his sin of murder.  However, there is a glimmer of hope at the end of the chapter when it is recorded that Adam and Eve had another son named Seth.  The chapter ends with “Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord (always a good thing).” The downward spiral of sin is always meant to point to the need for a Savior from sin that only God can supply.  In fact HE promised to send a Savior from sin in Genesis 3:15.  The fact that men began to call upon the name of the Lord was a good sign, since HE is the only one who can provided the Savior from sin.  Human effort will never defeat sin.  Lord, thank You for saving from sin’s downward spiral and penally of death those who place their trust in Your sin conquering and death defeating Son, Jesus.
